Summertime Wardrobe Maitenance

Typically, summer days are a bit slower and a great time to accomplish wardrobe and closet care. Here are a few ideas for you. If you’ve been procrastinating about these, it will feel so good to check any one of them off your list!

Care for your accessories

Take any worn shoes and boots to the cobbler now. Fix the heels you’ve been meaning to; clean up the scuffs on the boots; replace loose elastic; polish, moisturize (leather always needs that!) and care for your items now. Don’t forget your handbags—that cracked strap? It can be fixed!

Adjust where necessary

Go to the tailor. Often people will have a few items (or a pile of them) that need to be hemmed or adjusted in some way. It’s so easy to put this off, but a good alteration is the key to looking polished and pulled together. Your time and money spent on this will have a huge return on the investment.

refresh the whites

Review your summer basics. Are your white T-shirts feeling a bit tired? Despite having just been sold to Shein (sad!), I still love the Everlane organic white boxy T-shirt. I also love this AGolde option, this Gap option and this Veronica Beard option. Pro tip: buy two of one style. One to wear everyday and one to keep for the days when you need a pristine white T-shirt.

get creative

Reframe a problem piece. Did you ever consider dying a garment? It can be as easy as popping it into a big pot of tea (see here) or more of a production (finding a professional dyer to salvage a great piece)

release & reorganize

Focus on a few sections of your closet and edit ruthlessly. Those pieces you just don’t wear anymore? Someone else can be using them and it will free up space in your own closet. Then reorganize based on your current lifestyle and needs. The closet should make sense to you. Set it up so that it’s effortless for you to find what you need (rather than making it look like an Instagram post of a beautiful closet).
