How to Shop a Great Sale

There is nothing better than finding the perfect pieces at a great discount. With so many sales going on right now, here are some tips to help you navigate the huge amount of offerings and choose wisely.

1. It’s been on your list

Approach any good sale with pieces you’ve had in mind for yourself. Try not to get distracted and focus on finding the right items to fill the holes in your wardrobe. A note of caution: if you find something that is soooooo right except it doesn’t quite fit, then you have to release it and carry on your search. Buying something that needs a simple hem is one thing, but purchasing a piece that’s too short or pulls funny in the back (or shoes that rub your foot in the wrong place) are all no-no’s no matter how great the price is.

2. you have no list!

This approach is to walk into a sale with a completely open mind and try a bunch of stuff you most likely never would if the items were full price. You still have to make sure the pieces fall somewhere within your personal style range. I always tell my private clients to think of their wardrobe like a bell curve: the bulk of your closet should fall squarely into the style profile you feel most comfortable in and then on either end of that you want to have pieces that are more conservative and more flamboyant respectively. Less amounts of those last two, of course, but those categories should be represented a bit and finding them at a great price is always nice.

3. take the pressure off

There can be a frenzied energy from other shoppers when you are in the midst of a major sale (hello, I’m looking at you Greenwich Sidewalk Sales!! and those long-gone Barney’s sales RIP). Take a deep breath and don’t let the energy consume you nor determine your purchases. If you find something great, then great. If that aggressive person next to you swipes it from under your nose, no worries! What you are meant to find will come to you (and that aggressive person is dealing with some serious negative energy so, you know, karma…)

4. introduce your new pieces to their friends in your closet

When you get home from a sale, make a few outfits right away with your new pieces. Doing this ensures that you will be ready to wear them and that’s the whole point: Fresh updates at a good price that mix nicely with what you already own.
